Powder Keg
Powder Keg
A collaborative production headed by Susan Bonner working with the students of the Grand Rapids Public Schools Museum School and Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University and Open System Technologies as part of the EPIC project (epicsite.org). I worked on this project during the spring of 2020. I was responsible for the finalization of the instruction booklet for this card game. I also worked on some music for the promotional video and some art for the playing cards.
“The Powder Keg Revolutionary War Card Game benefited from Mars’s skillful attention to detailed design while understanding the complexity of the whole project. Her insight into understanding the user experience guided her insights to make the instruction booklet bring attention to the most important elements of gameplay and educational content while making the design match the style guide. Marissa was a joy to work with as she is a willing collaborator and team member, encouraging others through her example of skills and insight.”
Check out the Powder Keg website! It shows the process and more about the game and gameplay!
The Serious Play Conference (external link) is a leadership conference for professionals who are exploring the use of game-based learning, sharing their experience and working together to shape the future of training and education.

Before taking on this project, this booklet had already been in production. It was my responsibility to take the existing designs and update them so that way the booklet would be more readable, easy to understand, and visually appealing.
I also worked on digital illustrations for the cards used in gameplay. Following the style guide was important when working on this project. The painterly yet stylized approach to the illustrations was a welcomed challange for me.
